June 30, 1999 - Duncannon Pa.
Hello Everyone,
Here I am in Duncannon Pa.
1121.0 miles out of 2160.3
almost three months out of 6
I passed the official halfway point on the 27th.
If the world was linear that would mean that I would finish on
or about the 24th of September.
The hiking the last few days has been brutal. Temperatures in the
high 80's and 90's and very muggy and very humid. sometimes night
time temperatures would be in the 70's. Within about 3 hours of hiking
the accumulated sweat would saturate my backpack straps and run down
my back saturating my hiking shorts until they were totally wet and
uncomfortable.
Since the Maryland state line, their have been more opportunities
to get off the trail for lunch or a place to stay. These include
state parks, road crossings and towns that the trail goes through, such as
Boiling Springs and Duncannon. I think that I may have gained back some of
the weight that I lost earlier in the hike.
Pennsylvania is famous for its rocks. We have had a sample of the rocks in
the last few days. Some people claim that the local trail clubs spend their
time sharpening the rocks. It will be interesting
to see what kind of time I make through these rocks..
I have about 150 more miles in Pennsylvania and then New Jersey.
I enjoyed Harpers Ferry. There is a lot of history in that town, and
it seems that most of the old properties are owned by the Federal
Government.
I am using the computer that belongs to a local resident who has
a computer store here in Ducannon. He was very generous by allowing the use
of his system for 1.5 hours or so.
